Klaten is a regency located between two famed and celebrated cities; Yogyakarta and Surakarta and two large exosystems; Mt. Merapi National Park and Gunung Sewu Geopark. Being famous with various cultural heritages and sites, and an abundance of touristic activities these two cities has experienced a high economic growth in recent times. With the amount of economic potentials, it is an irony that Klaten Regency is one of the poorest regencies in Central Java. Urban sprawl is the term which describes the spreading of urban development in undeveloped lands outside but within the proximity of the city.

Desakota instead is the terminology used to delineat ethe urban sprawl which happens inthe asian countries in particular, where agricultural activities are embedded within the urban realm, as such is happening in Klaten. To better understand the regions sprawl, an analysis of 5 different elements are done which consists of: Settlements, rivers, local economy, productive landscape, and cultural heritage. After analysing the sprawl, several problems arise such as: colonization of lands, ecological collapse, floodings, and traffic jams. It will eventually worsen in the timespan of 20 years if not planned carefully and will render Klaten as an obsolete region. A strategy of planning the Regency of Klaten to control the upcoming risks aswell as increasing the economic growth is done in a systemic way, utlizing multi-layered strategies.

Four different strategies are implemented namely: Orienting density, blue-green infrastructure, connecting economies, and upscaling agriculture. The large scale strategy is then tested in 2 different zoom in designs. In the end, the plan for the 2050 Klaten is a roadmap alternative of the region, to envisage a sustainable region in between.
