Jakarta is a city with population of over 270 millions, the city goes way back as the main port and capital city during Dutch Colonization in Indonesia from the 1600s, hence the large Dutch influence in the initial urban planning of the city. During those times, Dutch Government divided the settlements city into 3 quarters : European Settlement, Chinese Settlement, and Kampung Settlement (Village Settlement).
Moreover, contrary to most developing countries, where traditional villages are dissolving with the rapid modernization of the city, the Kampung Settlements in Jakarta are still going strong.
At present, the popular understanding of a Kampung settlement is that it fills in the cracks between city’s development, but the fact is the other way around, Kampung settlements have been standing still for hundred of years and the new development were built surrounding it.

These different pace of development, social, and economic quo have created a physical and social barrier between the city and Kampung Settlements, resulting in a severe exclusion of Kampungs from the urban tissue and development and its residents from the society.
This thesis tries to rethink the Kampung phenomenon in Jakarta, with an aim to reconnect Kampung Ampiun to its surrounding neighborhood by providing strategic
public spaces and new Educatorium that will work as a gate to open up the Kampung to the city. The Educatorium aims to be the new land mark for Kampung Ampiun
while providing the low income residents an equal right to education and social opportunities.
